Simple Project: False Cables

With this pattern, you can knit a wristband, headband, necklace or belt, depending on how long you feel like making it. It has the appearance of cables, without using a cabled knitting technique.

These are the techniques you will practice:

  1. casting on
  2. purl stitches
  3. slipping a stitch
  4. knit stitches
  5. yarn overs
  6. binding off

You will need a pair of knitting needles, some worsted weight yarn, and a 1" fancy button. A yarn needle is handy for weaving in the ends of the yarn.

Cast on 7 stitches.

rows 1, 3, 5,7, and 9- Slip the first stitch, then purl the rest of the row.
rows 2, 4, 6, and 8 - slip the first stitch, then knit the rest of the row
row 10 -  slip the first stitch, knit 2, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 2

repeat rows 1-10 until the work is as long as you want it, plus 1 inch. weave in and trim off the yarn ends.

Now you have a long strip with holes down the center. Take one end and poke it through the first hole, then pull the end all the way through. This makes the twists on each side of the strip. Repeat with each of the holes .

Sew the fancy button to one end of the strip, and use the last hole on the other end as a buttonhole to join it in a loop.
