Knits and Purls
Wait, knits AND purls? I thought it was ALL knitting?
Sometimes you will hear that there are only 2 stitches in knitting, knit stitches and purl stitches, and that is pretty much true.
A Knit stitch is made by pulling the yarn through a loop from the back toward the front.
A Purl stitch is made by pulling the yarn through a loop from the front toward the back.
Here is a secret.
There is only ONE stitch.
Just one. Really.
It just depends on which side of the stitch you are looking at.
This is important once you start making things, but for now, just remember that knitting, or making stitches knitwise, means to pull the yarn through from back to front. Purling, or making stitches purlwise, means to pull the yarn through from front to back.
